KYENJOJO: Kyenjojo Chief Magistrate's Court compound was on Monday (November 25, 2019) packed to capacity as many people turned up to witness the Court Open Day.
The Open Day was presided over by Fort Portal Resident Judge, Hon. Justice Wilson Masalu Musene, who was welcomed by Judge Designate Vincent HW Emmy Mugabo, FortPortal Assistant Registrar HW Henry Twinomuhwezi and Kyenjojo Magistrate Grade One, HW Asuman Muhumuza.
The LCI Chairperson Kasiina Ward, Mr Kiiza Elisha Kallisa, thanked the courts for bringing services closer to the people by holding such accountability forums.
He equally pointed out some of the challenges faced in the access to justice such as unresolved, which land disputes, corruption in police, frustration by court processes and expensive legal services coupled with poor security.
These were concerns re-echoed by the Kyenjojo District RDC, Mr. Isaac Kawonawo, who emphasized the need to address transport challenges in visiting locus due as well as insufficient manpower.
HW Muhumuza said the court has 890 cases pending before the GI Court while 103 matters are pending the CM Court.
He stressed the need for another Judicial Officer to curb the backlog at the court and appealed for more support to ensure that the court operates optimally.
He commended the district leadership for wholly embracing Judiciary initiatives such as Plea Bargaining, Small Claims Procedure, Mediation, and Community service that have ensured that justice reaches the grassroots.
Hon. Justice Musene, on his part, encouraged the public to embrace Court Open Days as well as free legal services. He urged them to be vigilant on the contracts they enter with moneylenders. He appealed to them to avoid land wrangles and domestic violence because these are the leading causes of cases in courts.
In light of the challenges raised, the Judge pledged to cascade the issues to the Judiciary management for better management.
Representatives of different Justice Law and Order Sector institutions were on hand to explain to the public how their offices work.
